This is Kylie again, singing one of her ancient hits on her BBC special show (from Perez). How old do you think she looks in all that Hollywood Glamour? Red lipstick, golden dress, slicked-back hair- about forty? Well, she is about forty. She’s actually thirty-nine. I really like the way she looks like a fabulous mature woman now, instead of trying to be a bimbo as you might expect.
What’s more, forty is the new gorgeous (even if I do say so myself), and high shoes and red lipstick are supposed to signify a kind of maturity and self-confidence that is possibly a bit inappropriate on someone who only just left school. That’s why, if you’re a youngster, heels and red lipstick can make you look older- it’s the whole point. One of the best things about getting out of your youth is looking and feeling comfortable in more glamorous looks that are often rather silly on a 22 year old. And Prada, apparently (I can’t afford it).
As we do actually get increasingly sexy as we age, not the other way around, it would be great if the idea of trying to look younger could just disappear in favour of the idea of simply looking fantastic. Not that this is necessarily easy to achieve. We nearly all look lovely as young folks, despite hardly ever recognising it at the time, but staying gorgeous for decades in a row is harder to achieve, if only because of the increased number of Krispy Kreme doughnuts that have passed our sights. Or, in the case of certain ultra-skinny celebs, increased drugs.
Tomorrow I promise to post about heavy Russian literature or rocket science or something else more intellectual…
