why is this an ad-free blog?

See that cool little owl over there on the left? If you want the icon too the instructions are here, and this is what you agree to mean by using it:

1. That I am opposed to the use of corporate advertising on blogs.
2. That I feel the use of corporate advertising on blogs devalues the medium.
3. That I do not accept money in return for advertising space on my blog.

These are all true. I do not want big advertising on my blog, the front of my house, tattooed on my forehead, or anywhere about my territory, and I do cringe at the sight of otherwise nice-looking people and things decorated with ugly great banners selling big blue things that disturb the visual peace. And more importantly, if someone being given secret or otherwise free gifts by the coca-cola company offers me a drink, I may not fully trust their recommendation.

This does not mean I want to change any laws or tell other people what to do. It just means you know what my opinion happens to be on this, and also where it hails from.

If I want to advertise something I will do it anyway for free because that is what blogs are for: the spreading of recommended ideas, thoughts, pictures, experiences and other human beings as revealed in other blogs.

Obviously the coca-cola company also isn’t beating down my door to get a banner on this blog anyway. Which is just as well, because if they did, I would say; Coca-cola company, you need to rebrand right now as an exclusive upper-class special brand and stop selling those giant-sized addictive bottles two for one so as to exploit the coke-addicted sub-classes and get back some of your integrity as a gourmet drink! Which they would disagree with. You probably do as well. But in the meantime, Coke seems to be so addicted to its own continuous explosion (how many more pointless “flavours” costing squillions in research and bad marketing?) that I wonder if it could end up ironically killing itself along with the unhealthy underclasses. And that would make me sad. I love Coke.)
