bad weather

This is what I think I want for Christmas (two, obviously), although webcams that attach to a headband might be even better. Still, it’s very cool and sci-fi, isn’t it?
It has been cold here in Texas, which is always very funny to a Brit because of the fuss everybody makes, especially as Texans are generally so the opposite of fussy.
The two worst dangers are: first, car crashes. I think this is because there are so many such big roads that have to be de-iced. Also half of these roads are like roller coasters up in the air. I don’t think that makes crashes any more likely, but it certainly makes the idea of crashing a whole lot more scary. You visualise yourself flying over the edge and dropping like the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath. Not nice.
And second: house fires. Yes that’s right, it was on the news. The worst danger to Texans from this extreme weather of nearly zero with no snow, though, is house fires. This is because people actually have to turn their heating systems on, and the heating systems are so rarely used they probably don’t work anymore and will malfunction and start a fire and burn your house down! Also the heater is usually one big one, in the attic, which makes it invisible. It uses the same distribution system as the air conditioning, you see.
We used to laugh in England at how bad Brits are at dealing with bad weather, but of course the real issue is not so much badness as unfamiliarity. It’s not worth spending a lot of effort and resources protecting against things that only apply for one day a year, wherever you live.

I wouldn’t want a house fire but I would like to live someplace where the heat doesn’t get used very often.

I like that too, although right now our house in our house the heating is on and every room is either way too hot or totally freezing.
But it’ll only last another day or two
