The businesspundit has a lot of things to read about entrepreneurialship (thanks Beth for the tip). It’s also the most ugliest website I’ve ever seen. It also had on it somewhere yesterday (which I can’t find again today) job offers for bloggers wanting to earn (I think it was) $150 a month or so for blogging. The snag is, theyn were inundated with applications from normal bloggers and only had a few gaps left. Harley Davidson bikes blogging was one. Another was social networking. Anyone half decent at social networking is probably going to want a lot more than $150 a month to blog about it, is my guess.

The businesspundit is a good blog for people like me because it holds your hand and tells you everything you might want to know, in a guiding way. The blogger, rob, is very thorough and detailed. On the other hand, there are top-hole marketing blogs elsewhere that don’t tell you as much (ie. can make people like me feel like morons) but do have a more sprightly finger on the pulse of the universe. Room for all sorts on the nets.

Why isn’t there a Guide To The Internets daily online newspaper? Husband and I were discussing this yesterday. We were torn between “because there is already only we haven’t noticed it” (me) and “business opportunity! ka-ching!” (him) and “it’s probably cybernetically impossible for reasons to do with information flow and growth etc” (me again) and “there are several, but none is complete, and it depends which one you like” (him, which basically means the same as my last one but while making sense).

Also, why isn’t there an alternative to Windows? It is annoying that I have this lovely new computer and it still has to get messed up from time to time by the mysterious stupidity of Mr Gate’s invention. If the world is ever destroyed by intelligent machines (we saw Terminator 3 again the other week, it’s still good) it won’t be because they get guns and try to kill us, it will be because they put us on permanent egg-timer until everything just collapses.

I’m inclined to believe both that the “Guide to the Internets” you want is impossible for reasons of scale, and that there are a million “Guide[s] to the Internets” which all attempt to address that issue in their various highly imperfect ways. Google News is one, Technorati is another, on and on down to the small fry of personal linkblogs.

As to alternatives to Windows — well, there’s always Linux. Which even smart computer scientists of my acquaintance have given up on as a personal OS because you pretty much have to take it on at least at the level of a serious hobby in order to make it work right. If anybody ever successfully makes Linux “just work” the way Macs “just work” (a slight overstatement, but not *entirely* a fabrication) that person should win a Nobel Prize.
